We will survey fiction and nonfiction by a new generation of young writers in Africa and the African Diaspora. We will explore current concerns and trends in cutting edge literary projects in Cape Town, Nairobi, and Lagos and will explore what works have made it to the international market. In addition to gaining new perspectives on African urbanization through literary work, we will examine the Caine Prize for African writing, and discuss works by authors such as Binyavanga Wainaina, Yvonne Owuor, and Chris Abani.
